ACCESSIBILITY

Built to be used
by everyone. Not there yet.

Our aim is that anyone can use Undergrove’s site and workspace, with a keyboard, a screen reader, zoom or reduced motion. This statement says how far we’ve got, how we checked, and what still falls short.

Standard
WCAG 2.2 AA
Status
Partially conforms: some parts don’t meet it yet, listed below.
Assessed
· by Undergrove itself, not an outside auditor

What this covers

  • Every page of the site, in English, and the home page and field notes in Spanish, German, French and Japanese.
  • The workspace’s main views: Home, a conversation with an answer, Conversations, Settings and the command palette.
  • The investor room’s builder, and the 404 page.

How we checked

  • Automated checks with axe-core 4.14 against its WCAG 2.0, 2.1 and 2.2 A and AA rules: every page and view above, in light and dark, at laptop and phone widths, in Chromium.
  • Browser tests that run with every change and use the keyboard where a feature has keyboard controls: dialogs, menus, tabs and switches, with reduced motion.
  • A test that checks the contrast of every colour role in the dark theme; the light theme’s colours are checked by the automated run above.

What doesn’t meet the standard yet

  • Some workspace buttons are named differently from what they show

The search button in the workspace shows “Search or jump to…” but is named “Search and commands”. On Home, a model’s name is named “About” and the model, and its Select button, once it shows “Selected”, is still named “Select” and the model. Speech input users may need to say the other name.

    WCAG 2.5.3

  • The workspace’s recent list scrolls without keyboard focus

When the sidebar’s list of recent conversations is empty, the area can still scroll but can’t take focus. It holds no controls then, but it should be reachable.

    WCAG 2.1.1

  • The film’s captions are part of the picture

The 60-second film is silent, with its captions drawn into the video in English. A text summary of what it shows sits beside it, translated, but the captions themselves can’t be resized or restyled.

    WCAG 1.4.5

  • Charts and diagrams that answers draw

Charts, diagrams and slides a model makes in an answer have a text alternative only where the model wrote one. A chart’s data can be shown as a table.

    WCAG 1.1.1

Not tested yet

  • Screen readers: we haven’t yet tested with VoiceOver, NVDA, JAWS or TalkBack.
  • A complete keyboard-only walk through every page and view, by a person rather than a test.
  • Content other people publish to the gallery, and answers models write, which we don’t control.
  • The desktop, iPhone and Apple Watch apps.

Found a barrier?

Tell us what you were trying to do, on which page, and with what browser or assistive technology. We’ll reply, fix what we can, and add what we can’t fix yet to the list above.

A contact address for accessibility isn’t published yet. It will be listed here once there’s one a person reads.
